About Together We Carry:
Being a woman is not a monolithic experience. Yet, there is something shared amongst most every woman that is intangible, unbreakable, and truthfully – unwanted. It is the carrying of burdens. Every woman’s is different, some are unrecognized or even forgotten completely, but they are always there. These burdens shape how we treat ourselves and others, and how we see the world.
“Women endure entire lifetimes of these indignities – in the form of catcalls, groping, assault, oppression. These things injure us. They sap our strength. Some of the cuts are so small they’re barely visible. Others are huge and gaping, leaving scars that never heal. Either way, they accumulate. We carry them everywhere, to and from school and work, at home while raising our children, at our places of worship, anytime we try to advance.”
— Michelle Obama, in Becoming
Together We Carry is an anthology, or collection of short stories, of female narratives. It is a project that aims to show the many burdens we as women carry, together. TWC is created and curated by Samantha Freeman, from Minneapolis, Minnesota. These stories are not hers: they belong to the dozens of women who trusted her with their stories and experiences, and this project would be impossible without them. She owes tremendous gratitude to the countless women who have made this project possible – and especially to Becca Steinman, for helping to create something so beautiful.
TWC is a constantly growing project, and Samantha is always looking for more contributors. For more information on how to contribute a story, click here.
